Queen Elizabeth II of England dies at age 96

Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, died peacefully at Balmoral castle on September 8, 2022, at age 96.

She ascended the throne at age 25 on February 6, 1952, and was crowned on June 2, 1953. As part of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022, she will celebrate 70 years on the throne.

Until her death, she was the head of 54 Commonwealth countries. The Queen’s role carries no formal functions but has great symbolic significance and has helped to underline the sense of the Commonwealth as a family of nations. The Queen has stressed her role as Head of the Commonwealth and made an outstanding contribution to the association.
