Ibom Air: Blazing the Trail for Tourism and Business in the Gulf of Guinea

Date:

The arrival of Ibom Air’s aircraft in Accra, Ghana, on Sunday, June 28, 2026, marked more than the launch of another international route. It signaled a new chapter in regional connectivity, opening fresh opportunities for trade, tourism, and business between Nigeria and Ghana, two of West Africa’s biggest economies.

For Akwa Ibom State, the inaugural Uyo-Accra service represents a bold step in positioning the state as an emerging gateway to the Gulf of Guinea. The route is expected to reduce travel time, improve business mobility, and strengthen economic ties between the two neighbouring countries.

For years, Ghana has remained one of Nigeria’s most important trading partners in West Africa. Ghanaian chocolate products enjoy a strong market in Nigeria, while Nigerian open markets products —including Asian-made cosmetics, hair extensions, fashion accessories, pharmaceuticals, and processed foods—continue to attract buyers across Ghana.

Many Ghanaians find the hair extensions from Nigeria to be cheaper compared to others imported from other countries. An average hair extensions cost between cedis 200-1000 in Accra.

The new air connection provides traders with a faster and more convenient alternative for moving between both countries. Instead of relying almost entirely on the busy Lagos-Accra corridor, businesses can now explore direct access through Uyo, creating another commercial gateway for cross-border trade.

The strategic location of the Obong Victor Attah International Airport also gives the route added economic value. The airport sits within easy reach of major commercial centres in southeastern Nigeria, including Aba, renowned for its garment, leather and manufacturing industries, and the industrial and trading cities of Anambra State.

Manufacturers and exporters from these commercial hubs can now move more efficiently through Uyo, potentially reducing travel stress while opening wider access to Ghanaian markets. Likewise, Ghanaian entrepreneurs seeking business opportunities in southeastern Nigeria may find the Uyo route both attractive and cost-effective.

Beyond commerce, the new service has enormous tourism potential.

Akwa Ibom is steadily building a reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading tourism destinations, with its beautiful coastline, cultural festivals, rich cuisine and hospitality industry attracting visitors from across the country. Easier air access from Ghana is expected to encourage leisure travellers, conference delegates and investors to explore the state’s growing tourism sector.

On the other hand, Ghana remains one of Africa’s most popular heritage tourism destinations. From the historic slave castles at Cape Coast and Elmina to its vibrant arts, music and cultural festivals, the country continues to attract visitors from across the continent and the African diaspora. Direct flights from Uyo will make these attractions more accessible to Nigerian tourists.

The route also promises stronger people-to-people relationships. Students, professionals, religious organisations, sports teams and cultural groups will benefit from improved connectivity, encouraging greater collaboration between institutions in both countries.

For investors, easier access often translates into better opportunities. Regular direct flights can stimulate investments in aviation services, hospitality, logistics, agriculture, manufacturing and real estate. They can also support implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by making the movement of people and business faster and more efficient.

Ibom Air’s expansion into Ghana reflects the airline’s growing ambition to become a major regional carrier while reinforcing Akwa Ibom’s vision of becoming a preferred destination for investment and commerce.

As passenger traffic grows and businesses embrace the new route, the Uyo-Accra connection could emerge as one of the most important aviation links in the Gulf of Guinea, driving economic growth, expanding tourism and strengthening regional integration between Nigeria and Ghana.
